Tarka the Otter

Tarka the Otter

About Tarka the Otter
Tarka the Otter was published in 1927 by G.P Putnam’s Son. The book was written by the late Henry Williamson. Henry lived in Georgeham and wrote about the lovely surroundings of the Country of the Two Rivers. The Country of the two rivers is where the River Torridge and the River Taw meet at Instow.

The book depicted the life of Tarka a young otter cub born with his siblings on the River Torridge. The book follows the life of Tarka as he grows up enjoying life exploring his river surroundings, trying to keep out of trouble, but unfortunately this never goes to plan. In the end Tarka gets caught up in an Otter hunt. With the hound tracking him down to a sad ending, when he confronts the dreaded Deadlock, the worst of the otter hounds.

In 1978 the book of Tarka’s life was made into a film. The film was narrated by the famous Peter Ustinov. The film was filmed in and around Devon and showed some of the wonderful scenery that surrounds the beautiful River Torridge. I followed along the path of the river to where the two rivers meet at Instow. Sadly Henry didn’t see the end of filming due to his failing health, sadly passing away before filming was complete.

Tarka the Otter is still today a classic family film and has been voted the 98th best family film of all time.
