Lynmouth
Lynmouth is an idyllic Devon harbour village that is situated beneath the cliffs that over look it, after the East and West Lyn rivers meet at Watersmeet which is about a mile outside of Lynmouth the West Lyn River, flows down through Lynmouth to the sea.
In Victorian times Lynmouth was known as Little Switzerland of England, over looking Lynmouth is Lynton. Lynton is about 700ft above Lynmouth, the two villages are connected by a water driven cliff railway. Lynmouth is imbedded in history ranging from the day that the Lynmouth lifeboat saved 18 people from the decks of the Forrest Hall ship in 1899, to the sad day in 1952 when the great flood washed some of Lynmouth away. The Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railwayfirst opened for service in 1890, out of interest the water to drive the railway is from the West Lyn River. These days Lynton and Lynmouth are both truly beautiful parts of North Devon with some lovely but long walks along the rivers.
