Instow

Instow

About Instow
Instow is a small village situated on the estuary where the two rivers meet (the river Taw and the River Torridge). The Land of Two Rivers was depicted in the Henry Williamson book Tarka the Otter, published in 1927. The book explains how Tarka had fun romping across the golden sandy beach and through the sand dunes.

Upon arriving at Instow you see the signs to the waterfront, before you can blink an eye you have arrived at the waterfront. Few can resist stopping for a while and taking in the scenes and breathing in the fresh air of being right on the waterfront.

Through out the years Instow hasn’t changed, still today those lovely scenic views over the estuary remain, during the evening when the sun is setting over the water, the sights can take your breath away.

Instow Shore

If the tide is in whilst you are visiting, then the beach is lovely and clean but a bit small, but if you visit when the tidy is out then you are gifted with a lovely wide expanse of golden sand.

There is nothing better than a stroll along the shore passing time, during the summer months the beach can become busy but there is usually still more than enough beach for everyone to appreciate what a special place Instow is.

Across the water on the opposite coast, you can see Appledore sitting quietly under the green fields above it. If you glance down the estuary from Appledore you can see Bideford.

If you visit Devon then one of the nicest ways of getting to Instow is via the Tarka Trail. The Tarka Trail is a 180 mile long cycle/walking trail that runs from Barnstaple, to Bideford and beyond through the countryside. If you’re not up to this then you can drive along the main sea front where there is parking along the roadside.

I think of nothing better than cycling down the Tarka Trail during a lovely summer’s day, arriving at Instow and indulging in an ice cream whilst sitting on the golden sandy beach, truly wonderful.
