About Arlington Court Arlington Court is situated on the A39 about 8 miles from Barnstaple, the estate is owned by the National Trust and covers an area of about 30 acres of formal and informal gardens.
The last owner of the house was Miss Rosalie Chichester and her last wish was that all visitors should be greeted at the door. So after ringing the door bell you are still met and shown into the house today. The inside of the house is a wonderful place with priceless treasures ranging from model ships to truly beautiful tapestries hanging in a variety of different rooms.
Arlington Court also houses The National Trusts largest horse-drawn carriage collection, with over 50 carriages housed in a purpose built building situated opposite the stables, these carriages are priceless and take you back to a day long forgotten. If seeing these carriages whets your appetite then you can have a carriage ride around the grounds, they also carry out demonstrations of how to saddle up the shire horses ready for your ride.
After all this it’s a true pleasure to spend time exploring the grounds and gardens, take in the formal Victorian gardens which are really lovely. On a beautiful sunny day there is nothing to compare to a gentle stroll around the gardens taking in all the sights and aromas of the plants and flowers.
A visit to Arlington Court is a certain bonus if you are holidaying in North Devon, why not go and enjoy a look in the past at this forgotten era, in such superb surroundings.
